Caring Adult

American parents and educators are now called to meet the challenge of changing the nation’s dropout rate, one of the highest in the industrialized world.  We are faced with this crisis and must confront the problem head-on now…..not next school year, but immediately.  According to Every Child, Every Promise: Turning Failure into Action, the numbers makes it abundantly clear we must act now to combat the alarming drop out rate.  One way is to involve a caring adult in each child’s life.

  • One-third of teens and 20% of younger children lack quality relationships with their parents
  • Only 8% of young people ages 6 to 17 have a formal mentor
  • More than 40% of young people ages 8-21 say they want more adults in their lives to whom they can turn for help

As parents, we are the most important person in a child’s life, but we also need to include others that can help us by making sure our children have support in all areas of their lives, including education.  If there are issues in the classroom, go to the principal or counselor of the school.  If your child needs additional one-on-one tutoring help, find a tutor.  Online tutoring costs are minimal and can be a tremendous help to students; one responsible online company is eTutorWorld.  Their dedicated educators believe they can be meaningful mentors, guides and models for children.

Having a relationship with a solid, responsible, caring adult, whether a parent, an educator or a community member, is one of the most important advantages we can offer our children to save them from failure.  Let’s be that person!
