One of our goals at eTutorWorld is to help students build skill levels and apply that new knowledge to real world issues and problems. We believe this way of teaching gives us confidence our students have a full understanding of the subject area. Our Learning by Design approach to education is a process of designing lesson plans with real world problems relevant to the learner. Exposing students to this kind of learning sets the stage for later success in life beyond school.

When we design lesson plans for our students, we integrate the curriculum so that the tutoring session connects our students to real life situations. The purpose of integrating subject matter with relevant issues that students find important is multi faceted and will:

1) keep the student interested and engaged in being a learner

2) help students see the relevance and value in being a learner

3) set the course for helping students become active and valuable citizens

4) increase the understanding that getting a good education is important

Integrating real world problem solving into a lesson plan is somewhat like Career Education. In the 1980s Career Education became an important educational goal, and schools added career education to their curriculum. Many times it was taught as an independent subject, but that was not the best approach because it was isolated from real life. Now activities in career education are integrated into the subject areas so that curriculum makes sense to the student. Engaging in career exploration can begin as early as 5th or 6th grade and can be an enriching part of the student’s day at school.

We at eTutorWorld strive to make our lessons innovative so the student can see beyond the subject area itself and look to why the subject is important in real life and for further exploration of a career choice.

Health issues, especially in the area of diet and nutrition, are a huge interest among educators who see results of poor dietary habits in children. Students who come to school tired, unmotivated and in poor physical health have a difficult time learning and keeping up interest in what is happening in the classroom. The reason students have difficulty in school is most often due to poor diet. Even with the educational programs we provide at school about good food choices, children have little impact on what kinds of foods are put in front of them at home.

Today there is an abundance of information about nutrition, and parents are learning to assure their children have the best diet for success in school. As far back as 1965 when Adelle Davis wrote her first books on nutrition, Let us Get Well and Let us Eat Right To Keep Fit, concerned mothers were adapting their menus to offer healthy choices. In those books Davis says -Your nutrition can determine how you look and feel, whether you are grouchy or cheerful, homely or beautiful, whether you think clearly or are confused, enjoy your work or make it a drudgery. Those words of wisdom are still true today and why every parent should strive to prepare healthful meals.

A proper diet is the key to whether or not a child can obtain a good quality education. Nutrition affects the physical, emotional, mental and intellectual growth of each child. All children need and deserve a healthy lifestyle, plus children need good role models that give them guidance they need to make good healthful decisions. Interventions to improve the nutritional status of children have a positive impact on the growth and health of children, educationa1 outcomes, and productivity as adults. Let us Eat Right!

Most likely your children are on YouTube or MySpace. In this world of technology, it is now rare to find a middle or high school student without their cell phone and access to computers. Steve Mollman, a free-lance writer for over 25 publications, including the Wall Street Journal and Time, writes about a growing perception that student communication and online collaboration are important 21st century skills, and that many of these skills students will need to use in the workplace or in college. He goes on to say: In developed countries it is not uncommon for students to be wired at home. Knowing students are more often using technology to communicate, plus using computer to gather knowledge, makes it imperative we as educators are prepared to provide student learning through this medium.

Currently in the field of education, we are trying to keep up with technology advancement. Most classrooms today have access to computers, and students as young as pre-school are learning keyboard skills. Technologies in particular have found a receptive audience among educators. Many use blogs to share ideas on teaching and technology, says Mollman. He also points out that many teachers now are ready to kill off the classroom lecture and get students more involved with learning through technology. Mollman asks the question, “Why fill classrooms with passive listening in chemistry class if it could be better used for practice and interaction?” He points out the need for practice and interaction in the classroom, and says lectures can be listened to at home.

The move toward more interaction and less lecture in the classroom gives online tutoring companies a way to augment the teaching strategies in the classroom. Online educational tutoring companies, like eTutorWorld, are becoming popular with students because an online learning experience can be very interactive and exciting. Because of the technology involved, eTutorWorld can perform as a class within a classroom by bringing the same curriculum taught in the classroom to the student in a different and more personal way. We have access to local school educational standards and can move along with the flow of curriculum in the classroom.

In addition, eTutorWorld takes online technology to a level beyond the classroom, and can provide the needed practice on skills, plus teach skills in a fun technical environment. Offering educational services where children naturally want to assemble, makes it more likely students will find online tutoring a rewarding experience and a way to achieve better scores in the classroom. Plus students can receive the support they need and be served by tutors they can trust, like a classroom teacher.

The goal of eTutorWorld is to offer tutoring as an after-school activity, as well as during the summer months, so those students needing additional help or to students who want to get ahead in their school classes. Tutoring can be a year-round support. Reaching to the wider community through after-school and summer programs can benefit entire families by keeping students involved in their own education. This inexpensive and easy-to-use offering is increasingly making inroads in education, and eTutorWorld offers both free and paid-for versions of their product. We engage, support and recognize individuals and organizations working to help young people succeed.

All parents want their children safe from physical and emotional harm, and most parents seek to provide daily safeguards in the lives of their children. Furthermore, child safety is the number one priority of baby furniture companies, lawmakers who write child restraint laws for vehicles, recreation centers, schools, online companies, and others.

According to Every Child, Every Promise: Turning Failure into Action

Only 37% of children and youth experience this promise of safety

Between one-fourth and one-third of all young people never or only sometimes feel safe at school and in their communities

Less than half of parents of children under 18 say that safe, affordable, high-quality after-school activities are available in their communities

These data begs the question, how could this be so if we, as a society, are making safety a priority? Somehow we fail for some children.

Let us look at the 3rd point of the survey results above regarding after school programs. A good constructive activity for after school hours is a reputable online tutoring company such as eTutorWorld. In the comfort of the home, a parent can be assured of physical safety with eTutorWorld. Our program also is an emotionally safe activity for students 5th through 12th grade. Developing a good teacher/learner relationship with one of our responsible online tutors is a high quality experience that not only helps children learn needed skills in a particular subject area, but also can help students make good decisions about their own behaviors as it relates to safety issues in virtual places. Our company promises a safe place for all our students and fosters the sense of security at all times. In addition, we comply with COPPA (Child Online Privacy Protection Act).

American parents and educators are now called to meet the challenge of changing the nation’s dropout rate, one of the highest in the industrialized world. We are faced with this crisis and must confront the problem head-on now…..not next school year, but immediately. According to Every Child, Every Promise: Turning Failure into Action, the numbers makes it abundantly clear we must act now to combat the alarming drop out rate. One way is to involve a caring adult in each child’s life.

One-third of teens and 20% of younger children lack quality relationships with their parents

Only 8% of young people ages 6 to 17 have a formal mentor

More than 40% of young people ages 8-21 say they want more adults in their lives to whom they can turn for help

As parents, we are the most important person in a child’s life, but we also need to include others that can help us by making sure our children have support in all areas of their lives, including education. If there are issues in the classroom, go to the principal or counselor of the school. If your child needs additional one-on-one tutoring help, find a tutor. Online tutoring costs are minimal and can be a tremendous help to students; one responsible online company is eTutorWorld. Their dedicated educators believe they can be meaningful mentors, guides and models for children.

Having a relationship with a solid, responsible, caring adult, whether a parent, an educator or a community member, is one of the most important advantages we can offer our children to save them from failure. Let’s be that person!
